When it comes to concealer, makeup artist and creator of Glam Bootcamp Kendall Swenson says the steps you take to prep skin before and after concealer application is just as important as choosing the concealer itself. Concealer is great for covering up blemishes throughout the face, brightening up under eyes, and even contouring. With so many uses, however, it may be hard to decide on the right concealer for you. You’ll want to keep in mind your skin tone and type, as well as what kind of coverage and wear you want.
While it may seem more simple (and cost-effective) to invest in one concealer to pull double-duty on both your under-eyes and blemishes, Gabriella Corricelli, a professional makeup artist based in Boston, recommends picking a brighter shade for under the eyes and a foundation-matching shade for spot coverage (it will create a “natural and seamless” finish).
And just like the best concealers, we’ve got you covered: Read ahead for all our product recommendations, from color-correcting spot treatments to creamy brightening formulas. We evaluated each one on its shade range, finish, application, and wear.
It's about glam time you treated yourself.

Coverage: Most concealers will tell you what level of coverage their formula can tackle. Someone without skin issues like blemish scars or dark circles might just need a dab of concealer for a brightening effect, and can opt for a light coverage. Someone in-between coverage needs can choose medium, and someone looking for full coverage should choose full. However, it’s important to note that most formulas are buildable so you can increase the coverage of a light or medium concealer to get your desired look.
Finish: Just like with foundations, concealers have unique finishes that you can play around with to suit your desired look.
Longevity: Concealers will typically tell you on the label how long they are built to last for, usually around eight to 16 hours. However, there are some MUA-approved tips that can get your concealer to stretch even further. See tips below.
“I prefer liquid concealers around the eyes as they are easier to manipulate to get the amount of coverage you want,” says Swenson. One of her favorites is the TARTE™ Creaseless formula. This concealer is built like an eye cream and adds continuous hydration during its 16-hour long wear. Plus, it’s waterproof which helps it stay on through sweat, tears, or anything else you go through in a given day. “The TARTE™ formula is great for your money because it is full coverage,” says Swenson. “The trick to using it is to only use a little as it goes a long way.”
Even a small amount of this concealer goes a long way. Its highly pigmented formula works best to conceal dark circles and redness, leaving behind an even and skin-like finish. We loved how natural and lightweight this concealer felt on our skin, and it blended in seamlessly when applied. If you’re looking for a product that will go on smooth—and stay that way all day—this long-wearing concealer is the one for you.
Looking for full coverage without that cakey look or feeling? Opt for this lightweight formula from KVD, which conceals everything from hyperpigmentation to acne. After testing this concealer all day, we were pleasantly surprised by its long-lasting power, and didn’t notice any fine lines or creasing. One Ipster appreciated the full coverage of both dark spots and eyebags. “Just a little bit of product can fix any marks on your face,” they wrote. “Far less creasing under-eye than most other concealers I've tried, even on my mature skin.”
“For women who have oilier skin, or who struggle with creasing concealer, the longwear options are nice,” says Swenson. She loves this NARS creamy option that “offers a medium texture and is very smooth. With this formula, a little goes a long way and lasts for up to 16 hours.
Sometimes instead of opting for a dewy-finish concealer, choosing a matte option can make your makeup look virtually undetectable. This formula from HUDA BEAUTY is crease-proof and has medium coverage but is buildable to full, so you can use it all over your face for different coverage needs. Plus since it’s no-comedogenic, it will never clog pores and encourage breakouts.
Shape Tape has a cult following—including Corricelli—and for good reason. Not only is the concealer great at disguising any blemishes, but it comes in especially handy when brightening your under-eyes or contouring. Corricelli likes to use a lighter shade at the high points of her face to highlight them. “Smooth application is key, especially by your eyes,” she says. “You can achieve this with a few light and thin layers.” And before setting your concealer with powder, she recommends making sure it’s totally dry before applying (otherwise it won’t stick).
The large, doe-foot applicator of this concealer makes it ideal for covering spots and blemishes, picking up the perfect amount of product (spoiler: you don’t need much) and making it easy to place product precisely where you want to conceal. Its creamy formula is buildable in case you have an extra fussy breakout to cover, and it layers seamlessly with other makeup products without looking heavy. We only wish the shade range was bigger!
This long-wearing concealer is a savior for those struggling with redness or acne. Even without using a color corrector, we found this concealer covered up discoloration and blemishes better than most with a creamy, full-coverage formula. Plus, its buttery texture doesn’t dry out sensitive skin, instead leaving it soft and moisturized. “This fully covered my redness and uneven skin tones,” writes one Ipster. “This is a must-have, even if you wear minimal makeup.”
If you're looking for a natural finish and all-day staying power, TOO FACED is your girl. This concealer impressively disguises dark spots and blemishes without feeling or looking cakey. We loved how easy the application was, and how lightweight the formula felt on our skin. And since it’s made with coconut water and hyaluronic acid, our skin was left feeling soft and moisturized, even after all-day wear.
Smooth and lightweight, the formula of this concealer “feels like feathers on your skin,” writes one Ipster. Its lush texture glides on easily and blends well with only a few dabs, so you don’t have to worry about looking cakey. Though its coverage is a bit sheer, it’s still enough to brighten up dark circles and hyperpigmentation, so we’d recommend it for those who want a minimal makeup look.
Sometimes, concealers can highlight fine lines and creases more than they hide them—but with this concealer, those worries are a thing of the past. This creaseless formula is packed with anti-aging superfoods, including black sesame oil and seaweed, which help nourish your skin while brightening and concealing dark circles and blemishes. “I wore this for 16.5 hours and it still looked great,” raved one Ipster. “I was blown away by the coverage, and how well it covered fine lines without making them appear worse.”
You might not wake up with bouncy, dewy skin, but you can fake it by swiping on this concealer. Formulated specifically for under-eyes, this medium coverage formula melts into your skin, creating a radiant, glowy finish. A boost of caffeine also kicks puffiness to the curb, leaving you with a plump, well-rested look. When you don’t have time to hit the snooze button, reach for this brightening concealer.
There are two key ways to get your concealer to last longer: skin prep and makeup setting. Before putting on any concealer, Swenson recommends applying eye cream to your under eye area. “Skip an emollient cream in the morning, as the ingredients can cut through your concealer and cause it to separate,” she explains. “Instead, use an eye cream that is a lightweight, silicone based formula, which will fill in all the tiny lines around your eyes and create a smooth canvas for your concealer.” She loves the MAC Fast Response Eye Cream and the INKEY List Caffeine Eye Cream for her clients.
Once you’ve prepped your skin, make sure to only “use the minimal amount of concealer that you really need,” says Swenson. “Applying a thick amount is a guarantee that the concealer will crease, crack, or make your skin look too crepey.” If your concealer looks a little off or is settling too much into wrinkles, the amount you’re using is usually always the culprit.
The final step to making concealer last is locking it in with a setting powder. We love the CIATÉ LONDON Extraordinary Translucent Setting Powder for this. “So many women skip this step,” says Swenson. “You need to use a lightweight loose setting powder and sweep a tiny amount on with your brush to help lock it in.”
Remember, if you’re ever lost or need recommendations in a flash, check out the IPSY Shop for Ipster favorites. The number one rule of concealer is that less is more when it comes to using it for dark circles, and if you’re trying to blemish-correct and you’re not seeing your desired results, color correcting underneath concealer can help you achieve your desired look.
