If you have a skincare routine, you’re probably aware of the most popular stand-out ingredients like retinol, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. But sometimes, you just want to go the old school route and take things au naturel. Whether you want a plant-based hydrator, a natural way to depuff those eyes after a late night out, or just want to naturally brighten the appearance of your skin, there are actually tried-and-true ways to achieve the results you want without purchasing expensive products.

If you want to add a natural remedy to your routine or go fully natural with your skincare routine, we tapped Jeanette Graf, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine to share a few of her favorite all-natural tips.

1. Turmeric: Brightens Skin, Reduces Fine Lines

According to Dr. Graf,  “Turmeric can be used to help brighten skin, minimize dark circles, and reduce fine lines due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.” An easy way to incorporate it into your skincare routine is to mix an at-home face mask or grab a mask that has turmeric as a key ingredient. We love the MY SKINNY MASK Turmeric and Vitamin C Clay Mask.

2. Caffeine: Reduces Puffiness and Under-Eye Bags

Looking for an eye cream with caffeine in it is the key to depuffing sagging eyes after a night of lost sleep. You can sip your coffee and apply it topically! According to Dr. Graf, it can help “refresh the skin’s appearance as it constricts blood vessels and stimulates circulation, which then can reduce under-eye bags and puffiness.” Try the BEAUTANIQ Caffeine Eye Cream for a quick fix.

3. Aloe Vera: Reduces Inflammation and Redness

You should be reaching for aloe vera more often than only when you have a sunburn. This super ingredient is amazing at reducing inflammation and redness due to its natural cooling and moisturizing properties. Plus, Dr. Graf says it even “reduces fine lines and aids in the skin's elasticity, giving the skin a plump, glowing finish.”

4. Collagen: Reduces Wrinkles

Even though collagen is a buzzy word in the skincare world, it’s actually a naturally occuring substance in our skin that begins to decrease over time as we age. “Collagen can be ingested or applied to the skin to help boost overall skin health and help improve fine lines and wrinkles,” says Dr. Graf. One vegan collagen serum we love is the SONAGE SKINCARE Collagen Boosting Serum.

5. Rose Water: Anti-Inflammatory

Rose water not only smells amazing when used in a perfume, but it’s also packed with naturally soothing and anti-inflammatory properties for your skin. “Rose water helps reduce redness and skin irritation while also having antibacterial properties that cleanse the skin, leaving it rejuvenated,” says Dr. Graf. You can make your own rose water at home or pick it up in a product. We love the MAMONDE Rose Water Toner for nightly use to refresh skin.

6. Jojoba Oil: Anti-Inflammatory, Moisturizing

Jojoba oil comes from the jojoba plant, and it has been used in skincare for centuries to help hydrate, soothe irritated skin, and more. Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog pores, and is rich in copper, zinc, and vitamins B and E, which makes it a natural antimicrobial that can help reduce acne.

7. Rice Water: Improves Skin-Barrier Function

Rice water is essentially what you think it is: water left over from boiling rice. The skincare secret is that it’s packed with amino acids, lipids, antioxidants, and vitamin A, B, and E, making it skincare gold. “Studies have shown the benefits of rice water with improving damaged skin and skin barrier function in people with atopic dermatitis (the technical term for eczema),” Dr. Mamina Turegano, a triple-board-certified dermatologist, internist, and dermatopathologist previously told IPSY.

8. Coconut Oil: Hydrator, Anti-Aging

Applying coconut oil after vitamin C can actually make it more effective in protecting your skin against free radicals all day long. Just make sure to pair it with an SPF, because it may make your skin more susceptible to burns.
