A spritz of your favorite perfume offers a quick and easy way to embrace an aroma, while layering fragrances creates a unique blend of scents that’s personal to you. The latter, otherwise known as scent stacking, isn’t just about mixing perfumes, either—layering fragrances unlocks a spectrum of aromatic possibilities to express your own style and mood. With so many perfumes and scented body products on the market, you might be wondering what types of fragrance notes work well together, or how to best concoct your one-of-a-kind scent. Creating Your One-of-a-Kind Scent: The Basics of Fragrance Layering

Fragrance layering is all about making every scent you wear work in harmony. After all, your signature scent probably goes beyond just perfume—it extends to your body wash, hair products, body lotions, and even your laundry detergent. Think of fragrance layering as creating a scent sandwich, with each product adding a delicious tier to your overall aroma.

When it comes to layering scents, you’ll want to consider fragrance “notes.” According to fragrance influencer Kristin S., a scent’s top notes are light and immediately noticeable after applying a perfume. Meanwhile, middle notes (also known as heart notes) form the core of a fragrance, and base notes give a scent its lasting character. Familiarizing yourself with each of these notes, and their interaction, is key to successful fragrance layering.

Recognizing different fragrance families will also help you stack your scents. Fragrances are sorted into groups based on their dominant notes, including floral, citrus, fruity, gourmand, and woody, among others. “Each fragrance family has its own personality,” Kristin shares. “Florals are fresh and romantic, woods are deep and grounding, gourmands are sweet and edible, and citruses are bright and energizing.” When layering scents, aim to blend complementary families rather than ones that might clash. Kristin likes to combine a gourmand creamy vanilla with a woody, spicy sandalwood to create a warm, cozy scent. She also recommends layering a zesty citrus bergamot with a soft white floral to feel light and crisp.

Start with the Right Base Notes

Base notes are the foundation of a fragrance. They last the longest—often lingering on the skin for hours—meaning they'll have the most impact on your overall scent. “Base notes tend to be smooth and grounding,” says Kristin. “For example, a sweet vanilla scent helps soften sharper fragrances, while woody sandalwood adds elegance and warmth.” Musk, another popular base scent, blends well with floral or fruity fragrances.

When layering, try experimenting with these cozy scents. (Amber and patchouli are also great options.) “Apply your base fragrance directly to your skin, especially to pulse points,” says Kristin. “There, your body heat will help diffuse the scent.” You’ll then want to layer lighter middle and top notes to your scent stack.

Add Middle and Top Notes for Complexity

While base notes do the heavy lifting with their long-lasting power, middle and top notes are what make your fragrance feel vibrant, fresh, and unique. “Top notes hit your nose right after application, and usually fade within 15 to 30 minutes,” says Kristin. “They often bring energy and freshness to your fragrance with citrus (like bergamot, lemon, or grapefruit), herbal notes (like mint or basil), or green elements (like tea or cucumber).”

Meanwhile, middle notes—also known as the heart of your fragrance—help bridge bright top notes with deeper base notes. “Middle notes emerge once the top notes fade, and stick around a bit longer,” says Kristin. Common middle notes, she adds, include rose, jasmine, and lavender, as well as spicy touches like cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom.

When layering, try starting with a warm base (like vanilla or sandalwood), then apply a floral or spicy middle note, and top it off with something citrusy to bring it to life. Some great combos to try are grapefruit, jasmine, and musk (for a bright and softly sensual scent), or lemon, lavender, and vanilla (for a clean and calming scent). “For a suede-y sweet scent, I love combining vanilla, iris, and fig musk,” says Kristin. “Sandalwood, rose, and bergamot are a good combination too, giving you a fresh and romantic scent.”

How to Make Your Layered Fragrance Last All Day

So you’ve crafted your unique layered scent—now how do you make it last? A few simple tricks can make your signature blend stick around from morning coffee to evening plans. “Fragrance holds better on hydrated skin,” says Kristin. “Before applying any perfume, smooth on an unscented lotion or body oil to give the scent something to cling to.” This will act as a primer for your perfume, allowing it to last longer throughout the day.

When applying your initial base notes, you can also consider using a heavier oil or rich fragrance. These tend to be more concentrated and sink into the skin slowly, locking in your scent. “Dab or spritz your fragrance on warm areas like your wrists, neck, inner elbows, and even behind your knees,” adds Kristin. “Remember to pat your scent on and avoid rubbing it in, since rubbing can break down the notes faster.”

Setting spray isn’t just for makeup either. Fragrance-specific setting sprays exist, and they help seal in your scent and keep it from evaporating too quickly. But just in case your fragrance does start to fade, stay prepared with a miniature-sized version of your perfume. “I always like to carry a travel-sized rollerball version of my top note to reapply during the day,” says Kristin. Since top notes fade the fastest, refreshing them will help bring your layered scent back to life. This way, your custom blend won’t just smell amazing—it’ll stay amazing.
