We know and love mascara as the 60-second fix that can instantly make us look more awake, alive, and all around ready to tackle the day ahead of us. But if you’re using this product daily, it’s important to know the best way to remove it so you can continue to get the look you want without clumping, buildup, or breakage.
Keeping your eyelashes conditioned, strong, and hydrated is key to getting the growth of your dreams. To find out the best way to remove your favorite layering product, we chatted with makeup artist Lauren D’Amelio Ventre for the best tips.
It's about glam time you treated yourself.
Lauren D’Amelio Ventre is a global makeup artist and founder of D’AMELIO COSMETICS.
It turns out, proper mascara removal is one of the most ignored skincare/makeup tips. “As a professional makeup artist, I can’t stress enough how important proper mascara removal is,” says Ventre. “When mascara isn’t removed correctly, it can lead to lash breakage, premature shedding, eye irritation, and even clogged hair follicles around the lash line that may cause styes.” Ventre says neglecting your mascara removal is one of the biggest reasons her clients see sparse and brittle lashes over time.
But don’t worry; using gentle and effective removers can actually help add moisture back into your lashes while removing any product buildup.
There are a few different types of mascara removers, according to Ventre, and choosing the one for you all depends on the type of mascara you use and what you’re looking for. Here’s her easiest breakdown:
“These break down even the most stubborn waterproof formulas without tugging,” says Ventre. So yes, you can wear waterproof formulas—just make sure you’re picking up an oil-based remover. Ventre loves the ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm.
Ventre says using micellar water is “gentle and effective for everyday mascara, especially for sensitive eyes.” She’s a fan of the BIODERMA Sensibio H2O. We personally love reaching for the SYMBIOSIS SKINCARE Purifying & Imperfections Correcting Micellar Water
These are “specifically designed for waterproof mascara,” says Ventre. These are the removers that you have to shake to activate, and typically come in an oil/water solution that activates once you blend them together. She likes the LANCÔME Bi-Facil Double Action Eye Makeup Remover.
Grab a cotton round: Ventre suggests using reusable rounds that you can wash to avoid having to constantly buy more. Fully soak the cotton round in the remover of your choice.
Press gently against closed eyes: Ventre suggests pressing and holding the soaked cotton round on top of closed eyes for 15 to 20 seconds to gently loosen the formula from lashes.
Don’t rub: Not only does this cause lash fallout, but Ventura says it also stretches the delicate eye area over time, which can cause premature wrinkles. Gently press and wiggle the round to remove, and use more remover if the cotton round feels too dry and you’re noticing tugging.
Follow up with a lash-safe cleanser: Just like you need to double cleanse your face, “double cleanse” your lashes with a remover, and then an all-over cleanser that covers your eyelashes. Make sure to choose an eye-safe cleanser and never open your eyes as you’re washing them. We love the MAKE UP FOR EVER Gentle Eye Gel Waterproof Eye Lip Makeup Remover Duo for this.
First and foremost: Never sleep in mascara. Ventre says there’s no way around it; this will cause damage to your lashes over time if you’re a repeat offender.
If you’re a fan of waterproof mascara, Ventre suggests rotating your use of it since daily wear can be harmful to your lashes. Why? Because it takes a little extra work and scrubbing to remove it, which can irritate your lashes and be drying, she says.
“Condition lashes just like you would your hair,” says Ventre. “Lash serums or even a touch of castor oil at night can keep them strong.” And make sure to be gentle during your removal. “Your natural lashes are delicate, and preservation is always better than repair.” We love the BLINC Lash & Brow Enhancer Serum to help condition lashes while also support their growth.
If you’ve learned anything from this article, make sure it’s this: When it comes to your lashes, be as gentle as possible. Not only is the skin around your eyes sensitive, but daily mascara wear can make lashes be more susceptible to breakage and damage. Take care to remove your makeup properly, and you shouldn’t have any problems. If you notice any irritation around your eyes while using mascara or after removing it, make sure to consult your dermatologist, who can help you identify any irritating ingredients or methods that you’re using that could be causing damage.
